A stance, not a verdict
Technoskepticism is the practice of questioning technologies rather than accepting or refusing them on faith. It treats every tool — including generative AI — as non-neutral: a thing that carries values, redistributes power, and reorganizes the settings it enters. The point is not to slow innovation but to keep it accountable to the purposes of education.
Technophobia or refusal. It does not assume technologies are bad — it assumes they are consequential, and that those consequences deserve deliberation.
The five technoskeptical questions
Adapted by Dan Krutka and Scott Metzger from Neil Postman’s 1998 address, and circulated through the Civics of Technology curriculum. Select a question for its Postman root, a generative-AI classroom prompt, and a pedagogical-friction overlay.
Two frameworks, one lineage
The technoskeptical questions are an adaptation, not a replacement. They translate Postman’s five propositions about technological change into questions a class can actually ask. Questions 1, 2, 4, and 5 track Postman closely; question 3 reframes his claim that every technology carries an embedded idea into what the technology demands of us.

From skeptical questions to a curricular stance
Technoskepticism asks whether a technology serves our purposes. Pedagogical friction asks the next question: which difficulties are doing the educational work, so that we protect them instead of automating them away. The five questions surface the trade-offs; the friction lens decides which forms of struggle are worth keeping.
Difficulty that builds capacity — cognitive labor, rhetorical struggle, ownership of one’s thinking, and institutional deliberation. The kind that must not disappear.
Difficulty that restricts access — barriers that shut learners out rather than develop them. The kind that should be removed or redesigned.
Pedagogical friction keeps the curriculum conversation from being auto-completed.
Putting the questions to work
Technoskepticism earns its keep when it moves from abstract caution to disciplined review. For a practitioner-scholar leading technology across schools, the five questions sharpen four everyday decisions.
AI governance
Ask how a system handles data, privacy, bias, procurement, vendor power, staff workload, and long-term institutional dependence before treating it as a classroom solution.
Curriculum
Ask whether the tool preserves the interpretive, rhetorical, and reflective work through which students build durable understanding.
Equity
Ask which difficulties build capacity and which restrict access, participation, or demonstration without educational benefit.
Public responsibility
Ask when convenience, efficiency, or polish begins to displace human judgment, professional deliberation, and democratic accountability.
