A WALK THROUGH CHANGING MEDIA

Begin in the forest.
Follow what changes.

Carry a remembered rhythm. Leave a lasting mark. Send a voice farther. Change a stream. Test what a machine creates.

A continuous 3D journey, about 4–7 minutes. Trail assist walks toward the next task; you still handle the objects and decisions. Sound cues also have visible forms.

Trail assist can handle navigation. Movement keys take over immediately. Press Esc to release mouse look.

What the landscape represents

Ong’s primary orality, literacy, and secondary orality lead into Micah Miner’s proposed algorithmic secondary orality and tertiary algorithmicity. These media environments overlap and coexist. The journey is a teaching metaphor, not a ladder of intelligence or a universal history.

Pedagogical friction is the productive resistance learning requires. Its noetic, rhetorical, and existential dimensions are what the game asks of you; the material conditions that make any of it possible, including the access supports here, are the conditioning base beneath them rather than a fourth dimension alongside.

Thinking, articulation, and responsibility remain human work. The game illustrates these ideas; it does not measure learning or report dissertation findings.

YOU CARRIED MEANING THROUGH

The forest is
still in the signal.

You remembered with your body, carried a durable mark, transmitted a voice, recovered a quiet signal, and tested a generated path.

  1. Primary orality: memory and repeated performance.
  2. Literacy: persistent marks that can be revisited.
  3. Secondary orality: human speech carried electronically.
  4. Algorithmic secondary orality: human contributions shaped by algorithmic circulation.
  5. Tertiary algorithmicity: algorithmic generation as well as selection.

The final two environments are Micah Miner’s proposed extensions. Generating a path and then checking which parts of it hold is a small illustration of pedagogical friction: the work the game keeps for you is inspection and judgment, not repair. Trail assist and the other supports stay available the whole way, because difficulty that comes from awkward controls is not the kind worth keeping.

Your reflection stays in this page unless you save it.
